Poll sheds light on attitudes towards women in sports – News1130

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As Canada takes on England at BC Place in the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup this afternoon, we’re learning more about our attitudes toward women in sport in this country. The numbers of a new poll indicating while some progress is being made, some old attitudes remain.

Two-thirds of us believe women’s sports are just as entertaining as watching men play, and 90 percent of us agree that are great role models for girls.

“They are more likely than say older men or older women to say that certain sports are unwomanly,” she explains. “I think in general Canadians do say that they are embracing and supportive of professional female athletes, of but there are some disconnects.”

In terms of this women’s World Cup, one in three of those polled say they’re watching, that’s a better figure than the 21 percent who said in a recent poll they closely follow the CFL.
