UPDATE: AUSTRALIA’S elite female cricketers will become fully professional athletes with a minimum six-figure base salary guaranteed under the next collective bargaining agreement.
The new memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketer’s Association, set to come into effect next year, will ensure Australia’s elite players will be treated the same way as men.
In the interim, CA announced yesterday it is almost doubling its annual payments to Australia’s elite female cricketers from $2.36 million to $4.23 million.
However, within 12 months when the new MOU comes into effect The Daily Telegraph can reveal the Southern Stars stand to earn as much as the best state and Big Bash male cricketers in the country.
The best male state players can earn $250,000 a year including the Big Bash while average player earns about $150,000.
Already the best paid female athletes of any Australian team sport, the Southern Stars are now on the verge of becoming among the most lucrative national women’s outfits in the world with a base retainer of $100,000.
